It allows development of the OS to continue, though pretty much everyone is in agreement that it is not suitable as the primary FS for a production evironment. FAT is the current offering, because of it's simplicity, and ease of implementation. It is likely to be one of those two though) Because of that, the "Need" for an NTFS clone is a non-issue, because there will be a suitable alternative that will support filesystem extentions and permissions. (I have heard many many debates about which one people want to be the default, both for and against the features of these two, which is why I wont go into that. It is likely that ReactOS will someday support a journalling filesystem that is free and open, like perhaps EXT2/3, or REISER FS. (Pull the file from the i386 folder on EG, the winXP CD.) This would require that you have one, and would further entrench the idea that the ReactOS project wants you to be using the software legitimately. I expect that when ROS is mature enough to handle the MS NTFS.SYS driver, that ROS will allow you to install it from the windows installation media directly instead. You probably wouldnt need to have a fully blown NT/2k/XP install to get the driver. This entitles you to use the MS NTFS driver, so why not use the genuine article? The fact remains that if you have an NTFS volume, you are likely to have a valid windows site license.

In one sence developer wanting to develop a ntfs driver would be better to go and help out with the NTFS-3G to fix its problem and document the filesystem perpairing to build the reactos driver. Reason Specs of Ext2/3 will not be changing any time soon. This cannot be explored without a stable NTFS driver.Ĭompleting the function of the Ext2/3 driver would be high on the list in my mind at moment. So there is still a mountain of missing function that reactos will need that NTFS-3G does not cover.
So code sharing is extreamly hard to impossible.

Depending on what they fix in NTFS-3G to fix its write problems, the complete base of the NTFS driver for reactos might have to be rebuild due to the alterations in NTFS-3G.įuse/Linux drivers are not exactly compadible with NT kernels(reactos kernel). So if a Reactos NTFS driver is built now. Reactos NTFS driver will have to be constructed differently to NTFS-3G. Ie Fully working Read/Write operations no matter then number of files in the filesystem or anything else. I only voice my option against it for a reason.
